How to use Image Adjustments in Photoshop

Photo editing is very useful to make photos more attractive and colourful. In photoshop we can do whatever we want to make our photo more interactive and beautiful. when we are going to edit photo we can’t put all photoshop effect on our photos because it is not a successful way to edit photos. So I will explain what are the most important and useful adjustments when we are going to edit a photo or creating a new image.

Image Adjustments

Image adjustments are more often used to making an image more beautiful and more flexibility. first, you need to Open photoshop. after opening, you should go menu bar and click image > adjustment in there are so many image adjustment options are appeared as a dropdown list. (figure: 1)

There are seven important image adjustments. I will explain all the things with screenshot and also I have provided short video clips for your further understanding. Let’s see how to work with those.

 

1.Brightness/Construct

Using this option we can increase or decrease brightness and contrast of our image. Click brightness/Contrast it will prompt below(figure: 2) dialog box.you can change your image brightness, contrast or both brightness and contrast using this dialog box.

  • move the slider to the right side – increase brightness or contrast
    move the slider to the left side – decrease brightness or contrast
  • we can automatically adjust brightness and contrast clicking auto.
  • Use Legacy is automatically converted previous versions of the image.

I have saved three images separately. Normal Image, applying brightness image and low brightness image.you can see different between below three images.

2.Levels

You can open levels dialog box using keyboard shortcut Ctrl + l. Otherwise, you can navigate like below,

This image adjustment is similar to the brightness/contrast option but it is not exactly same to that option.levels are used to decrease and increase the contrast of the image. if we are going to change the input levels of the image, we can change black point slider – (255), midpoint slider – (1.00) or white point slider – (0). This histogram is shown what exactly points are changed into your image. Every image has a unique histogram. Output level includes two sliders, black point slider and white point slider.

There are three dropper tools in this dialog box. left to right respectively,

  • Black point
  • Grey point
  • White point

There is a label called preset that includes eight different options to apply for our images.

  • Darker
  • Increase Contrast 1
  • Increase contrast 2
  • increase contrast 3
  • lighten shadows
  • lighter
  • midtones brighter
  • midtones darker

There are four different channels.

  • RGB
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Red

 

3.Curves

You can open Curves dialog box using keyboard shortcut Ctrl + M.

The Curves dialog box is bit complex but it is more powerful and flexible image transformation. Actually curves are used to change the tone of the image. This graph(A diagonal line ) describes output tone and input tone of the image. curves can control each image tones individually.let’s say we want increase tone of the special point, first, we select that special point into diagonal line and drag that point to up it will increase tone but another point in image tone is decrease according to that increasing.we can select multiple points in that diagonal line.

preset includes nine different options that can be applied for the images.

  • Colour negative
  • Cross process
  • Darker
  • Increase contrast
  • Lighter
  • Linear contrast
  • Medium contrast
  • Negative
  • Strong contrast

Channels Include

  • GREEN
  • BLUE
  • RED
  • RGB

We can change grid size.there are two options. the selected one is default one and other we can apply for the graph. being apply the second option we can display details with grid increment 10%.

In addition, there is a tool like a pen. Using that tool here you can draw in the graph as your own opinion.it will change the tone of the image correspondently.

This graph consists of channel overlays, Histogram, baseline and intersection line. All the checkbox are selected if you need to see the only baseline you can unchecked other options and it will be shown the only baseline. if we want to adjust image tone automatically we can click auto and it will apply for our image.

 

4.Hue/Saturation

You can open Hue/Saturation dialog box using keyboard shortcut Ctrl + U.

Hue is colour and saturation means purity.that is the simple definition for hue and saturation.increseing saturation will be helped to image make more colourful (like vivid or muted).in this dialog box there are three sliders, Hue, Saturation and Lightness.

preset includes eight different options.

  • Cyanotype
  • Increase saturation more
  • Increase saturation
  • Old style
  • Red boost
  • Sepia
  • Strong saturation
  • Yellow boost

you can try out selecting each option and see what are the difference between your original image and edited image. In addition, there is another dropdown list. that consists of six colours and one different option name called master that means all colours.we can adjust all colours at once using master.

  • Master
  • reds
  • greens
  • yellows
  • cyans
  • blues
  • magentas

ex: if you select reds in the dropdown it will target only red colours of the image.

 

5.Black and white

You can open Black and white dialog box using keyboard shortcut Alt + Shift + Ctrl + B.

This option is rarely used but it’s important to edit some kind of images. This dialog box includes six slides which are obtained colour of Reds, Yellows, Greens, Cyans, Blues and Magentas.

in here preset includes 12 options we can apply for the images,

  • Darker
  • Blue Filter
  • Green Filter
  • High contrast blue filter
  • hight contrast red filter
  • Infrared
  • lighter
  • Maximum black
  • Maximum white
  • Neutral density
  • Red filter
  • Yellow filter

we can set tinting of the image checking tint checkbox. then activated hue and saturation sliders which can be used to increase saturation and hue of the image. also, we can click auto, it will automatically analyze the colours and apply for the image.

 

6.Replace colour

Image > Adjustment > Replace colour

  • eyedropper tool with a plus sign – this tool used to add a sample(specific object of the image).
  • eyedropper tool with subtracting sign – this tool used to subtract from a sample.

You can drag the fuzziness slider or you can type fuzziness value in the box.after you can replace colour dragging hue, saturation or lightness sliders.this is one of the quickest way to replace colours in our images.

 

7.HDR Toning

Image > Adjustment > HDR Toning

HDR  – High Dynamic Range

Most Profesional photographs are used this hdr toning adjustment make their photos more quality and attractive.this method can apply HDR styles to our photos. These adjustments are designed for 32-bit HDR images but you can apply for 16-bit or 8-bit photos as well.

preset includes 16 different methods,

  • City Twilight
  • Flat
  • Monochromatic Artixib
  • Monochrome High contrast
  • Monochrome low contrast
  • Monochromatic
  • More saturated
  • Photorealistic high contrast
  • Photorealistic low contrast
  • Photorealistic
  • RCS
  • Saturated
  • Scott
  • Surrealistic high contrast
  • Surrealistic low contrast
  • Surrealistic

also, there are four adjustment methods.

  • Exposure and gamma
  • Highlight compression
  • Equalise histogram
  • Local adaptation
